"Come on Sofie, The da Vinci Code wasn't that bad. Or... was it?"

Sorry folks, I couldn't resist.

A reminder that this Sunday our carnies are going to be Hot and bothered! I will be out all day though, so the discussion post will appear later than usual. Have a nice weekend!

There were some things(about the show overall, not this episode in particular) that I didn't quite understand which perhaps I can blame on scratched DVDs that skipped some scenes. So I borrowed it again from the library, but alas, this DVD set was damaged even worse.

I'm not that interested in the mythology of the show, so I'll just ask my most pressing question: why was Rita's husband so insistent that she and Jonesy sleep together?
the artist formerly known as pojymatitablu on September 27th, 2008 12:33 am (UTC)
Well, that's a relatively easy question *wipes brow*! It's still all about the consequences of Dora Mae's death in Babylon. Stumpy is probably the one who has been hit harder by the tragedy, and many fans agree that he probably blames Rita Sue's decision to have Dora Mae strip completely for their daughter's death. So while Rita tried to cope with it asking her husband to actually stay *closer*, he is trying to push her away - hence relying on Jonesy hoping he will "distract" her.

Let's not forget that Stumpy is okay with pimping Rita Sue to random customers between cootch shows, so he doesn't have that much sexual jealousy going on. As a matter of fact, shit hits the fan when it's obvious that Rita Sue is really into Jonesy on an emotional level.

So there was no particular reason he chose Jonesy?

Nah, he was just there, you know, pining for Sofie with no resolution after, probably, years, and Stumpy simply did the math :-D And well, then there's the authorial intent, I suppose, as this will obviously affect Sofie's storyline too.

So...I just stumbled into this "Carnivale Redux" by complete random act of god; or by act of management...

Anyway, coincidentally I have been revisiting this spectacular series with my boyfriend, who surprisingly enough, as never seen it!!

(The coincidence is that we are right on track with this group! We watched Lonnigan, Texas last night)

So, glad to meet you all!
The name is Am.
Good to find a Carnie fam to belong to!!!!

Some Season 2 spoilers
Ah yes, the episode where everybody gets laid. Tough guys, these carnies - Ben is utterly exhausted and sleep-deprived, and Stumpy has just been beaten up, but they can still make it!

So much in this episode. More than I remember. In one of my favorite lines from Northern Exposure - the answer only rattles the question more, don't it?

Why does Justin wake Iris that way? Because he can't resist the chance to scare her? When Justin enters the church, Norman looks at him as if he's seeing something terrible. He's not at all glad to see him. (I wrote a fanfic where Norman can see auras, which explained it.)

That scene in the church is one of many, many, references to resurrection - death and rebirth - which I think is a major theme of the series as a whole.

We see yet another reference to icy water. I keep wanting to yell at Ben, "Ice water won't keep you awake! People freeze to death in the snow by falling asleep!!"

A funny mistake in the captioning (I like to watch with them on): Rita Sue says to Stumpy, "The red tide is in." But the caption writer didn't recognize the 30s slang, and thought it was "I'm real tired, Sam." Sam????

When Sofie reads the cards and ends up yelling at her mother, is it really her mother's voice she's hearing? If it's the Omega, how frustrating it must be for Appy - to know that, and be unable to stop it.

Phineas Boffo at the Templars - I still wonder at the resemblance between "Boffo" and "Baphomet" (a being allegedly worshipped by the Templars, and the source of the classic image of the devil).

Jumping around - why is Ruthie so furious when she finds Lodz with Ben? Throwing a blind man down steps is kind of extreme. I think she has heard Scudder talk about his days with Lodz, and I think there's more to it than meets the eye. I had wondered if Lodz and Scudder were lovers, but Dan Knauf has said no, but he did say that Scudder took part in homosexual rituals as part of discovering his heritage. I think Lodz was also involved in those rituals, and Scudder told Ruthie about them. Then she sees Lodz standing over a sleeping Ben, and...

By the way, I just LOVE Ruthie's silk robe. I want it!

The cornfield dream, I think, has more relevance to the future story. I think it's much more than just foreshadowing of the final episode of season 2. But what?
